| To honour the memory of Al Page, the Victoria Women’s Shooters club has spearheaded the establishment of a memorial trust fund in Al’s name. With this fund, we hope to continue Al’s legacy by furthering firearms education, funding the ongoing support of new shooters, and possibly creating a perpetual bursary. On June 7, 2020, Victoria Fish & Game lost a life-member, a strong supporter, and a good friend.
Nobody actually knows how long ago Al joined the Victoria Fish & Game, but his list of influential involvement and achievements in the world of sport shooting is extensive and profound.
Al was interested in Black Powder, and with a few local enthusiasts was one of the original founding members of the Malahat Marauders. Years ago, Al helped to organize and host ‘bowling pin’ matches at the club.
Al was also involved with numerous handgun sports, including PPC shooting and IPSC competitions, and at one point was on the Canadian IPSC international team. In 1979, Al was a member of Team Canada in the World Practical Pistol Championships in South Africa.
He was also one of the local founders for the Cowboy Action shooting movement in western Canada. His wry sense of humor and sarcasm prompted him to choose his Cowboy Action alias as ‘Reverend Al’,
He participated in trap, skeet, sporting clays, and rifle competitions (when his knees would let him).
Al has been a club volunteer leader and organizer with numerous events over the years; the Game Dinner (which he chaired for two years), Outdoor Discovery Day, indoor air gun booth coordinator at the Pearkes Spring Boat shows (for the last 9 years), and one of the central mentors to our ‘Victoria Women Shooters’ group.
Al also instituted the general monthly meeting attendance prize draw in support of Saltspring Island. For a couple of years, he took over the range brass recovery program from Art Archer, which he recently handed over to another dedicated club member, Brad Woollven.
Al was a man of good character & conviction, and a staunch defender of gun rights and responsibilities. If you had a question regarding guns, calibers, reloading, or anything related to firearms, Al was your go-to-guy. Al drew on 38 years of retail sporting goods experience, and could answer multitudes of questions relating to shooting, reloading, and firearms, no matter how obscure your inquiry might have been.
Mentor, scholar, instructor, friend. We will miss him…
