Colwood PPC Club — November PPC Course Report
On 5 and 6 November, the Colwood PPC Club ran its second Introduction to Handguns and PPC course of the year in the Clubhouse and on the RP range at VFGPA. The course is run to introduce shooters to the safe and effective use of a handgun, as well as to the sport of Police Pistol Combat shooting. The course is run over two days, a Friday evening in the Clubhouse for some classroom work, and then a full Saturday on the range learning and applying the skills to handle and compete with a handgun emphasizing both safety and marksmanship training. The course currently costs $135 and includes the use of all necessary equipment, including the loan of a S&W model 10 revolver, holster, belts, speedloaders, 150 rounds of ammunition and lunch on Saturday. At the end of the course, students are qualified to join the Colwood PPC Club in competition, and are also awarded their holster card for VFGPA.
Despite what was initially a very bleak weather forecast for the event, the staff and students were met with reasonable fall weather for the Malahat, allowing for what was a very informative and fun training event for the handgun shooters that had signed up for the training course. Students were able to learn the skills required to safely handle and fire revolvers, at ranges from 7 to 25 yards, within the construct of the PPC course of fire which includes firing from standing, kneeling, sitting and prone firing positions, with the use of barricades, both left and right-handed, all within specified time constraints.
We had an excellent group of students for this course, all of whom applied themselves in earnest, and the improvement each of them made throughout the course of the day was remarkable. At the end of Saturday’s range day, with big smiles all around, students were presented their PPC certificate and holster card, with many committing to joining the Colwood PPC Club at its monthly match on 13 November. An excellent day of shooting, and a pleasure for both coach and student alike as skills were passed on and reinforced between shooters.
The next Introduction to Handgun and PPC course will be run in June of 2022, and if you are interested in signing up, additional information can be found at the club website at www.colwoodppc.com . This is an excellent training opportunity for new and skilled shooters alike to broaden their experience and learn new marksmanship skills, and we look forward to having you join us on the line one day soon.
