Are you ready to take your shooting to the next level!? Action Shooting is a dynamic and physically engaging style of competitive shooting where participants move through a course of fire, engaging multiple targets with a focus on accuracy, power and speed! Safety is always the paramount principle. All matches are designed and conducted to ensure the strict enforcement of firearm handling rules and range procedures.

South Island Action Shooters put on local level matches that follow the general guidelines and principles of the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC). Created in 1976, IPSC is the world governing body for action shooting sports and encompass multiple shooting disciplines.

The International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) provides a recognized shooting sport through the National Sport Governing Body, IPSC Canada, (http://www.ipsc-canada.org/) and the Provincial Sport Governing Body of IPSC BC (http://www.ipscbc.com/).

Handgun/Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC)/Mini-Rifle*: SIAS hosts an average of six (6) to eight (8) club level Handgun/PCC/Mini-Rifle matches per shooting season, along with two (2) Independent Shooting League (ISL) matches. Matches are typically held on a Sunday of every month from March to September.

*Note: Pistol Caliber Carbine is any semi-automatic rifle that fires pistol caliber ammunition (must be 9mm or larger, may be restricted or non-restricted), Mini-Rifle is any semi-automatic rifle that fires .22LR ammunition (generally non-restricted but may be restricted).

If you are a new shooter, our club has a set of prerequisite introductory courses that can ease you into the Action Shooting Sports; we start you out with our Handgun Essentials Course (if using a handgun), then our Holster Course (if using a handgun), and then finally the SIAS Range Safety Course (RSC). These ‘stepped’ set of courses will give you the confidence to try Action Shooting and the required pre-requisites to compete in SIAS Club Matches.

You can also take the two (2) day IPSC ‘Black Badge’ course with one of our local instructors. Successful completion of this course will supply you with an IPSC BC membership for the year that you complete the course, which allows you to shoot all sanctioned IPSC BC matches which take place all over the province including two (2) annual matches at VFGPA.

Multi-Gun: SIAS also hosts three (3) to five (5) Multi-Gun matches per shooting season. Multi-Gun combines the use of two or three firearms on a single stage! Multi-Gun discipline combines rule sets from non-sanctioning Multi-Gun bodies and takes into account the limitations of Canadian gun laws. For newer PAL holders who don’t have access to handguns, no problem, we have divisions for you! The SIAS Safety Course also acts as your prerequisite into Multi-Gun and covers Action Shooting with rifles and shotguns in addition to handguns. If you have a minimum .22LR rifle and a 12 gauge shotgun (pump or semi-automatic), you’re set to compete in Multi-Gun!

Please note VFGPA does not offer firearm, equipment rentals or ammunition sales, to participate in any of the shooting sports, shooters must bring their own firearms, equipment and ammunition.

Under Courses & Education:

South Island Action Shooters Range Safety Course

• Successful completion of this three (3) hours course allows you to compete in the South Island Action Shooting competitions/events including Multi-Gun.
• Students must have a valid Restricted PAL (if using a handgun or other restricted firearm) or PAL (if using non-restricted firearm which may include PCC or Mini-Rifle), be members of the VFGPA club, or have purchased a day pass.
• Pre-requisites are the Handgun Essentials Course and Holster Course, and you must be familiar with your firearm, or;
  • Previous shooting experience and Holster Course.
• You will need the following equipment;
  • firearm
  • belt
  • holster
  • four or five mag pouches
  • 100 rounds of ammo
• Course Cost is $20.
• Register online by checking the calendar for dates and clicking on the date you are interested in.

Black Badge

Through the 2 days Black Badge course, you will learn how to:

• Draw a handgun from a holster
• Shoot it with two hands, right hand, and left hand
• Speed reload
• Move and reload
• Shoot around barricades
• Shoot both kneeling and prone
• Move and shoot
• Shoot moving targets
• Shoot reactive steel target

Practice Sessions and Matches are held throughout the year, at the Multipurpose/Pistol Range from 9am – 4pm, with stages setup being on the previous day. Come on out and see what it’s all about.
